Here’s what readers are saying about Greg Lautenslager’s novel, Following The Flame…

I got the book the middle of last week and from the time I took it out of the box, I couldn’t put it down. Excellent book! It took me about four days to read it, and that is probably the fastest I have ever read a book of that length. I am looking forward to reading whatever book this author writes next.

Following the Flame... was a highly entertaining story and very well written, reminiscent of the work of a rather notable writer of running prose, John L. Parker, Jr. In fact, I enjoyed Following the Flame even more than I have Once a Runner, and that's no slight at all against the latter. I like that the protagonist came from very humble beginnings and has remarkably mortal foibles and pratfalls, he is easier to relate to and pull for (everyman underdog) than even Quenton Cassidy. Lautenslager weaves an evolving story that spurs the reader to continue and look forward to picking the book up again. His characters, including the protagonist, are quite human and the inclusion of the zen-like priest was a great touch. I am definitely looking forward to rereading it many times.

I’m going to have quit reading this book before I try to fall asleep at night. I’m either laughing out loud—which wakes up my husband—or my heart is racing along with Jonny’s as he sails around the track. It’s real hard to settle down. I probably need to read it in the morning when I’m dragging around, trying to get my act in gear for my day.

I started and finished the book in about nine days.  I couldn’t stop reading it! I’m logging 15–20 miles a day right now and am tired off my ass. But I would still sit up with a cold beer until the latest hours of the night turning the pages. I took the book everywhere with me trying to squeeze a few minutes in here or there to get in a page or a laugh or two. It was very real and something I believe all runners can relate to. Miles, jobs, women and partying This book had it all.  I don’t think I’ve ever read a book twice. But I have a feeling I am going to being picking up this book again and reading it soon.

Everything around my house was thoroughly neglected while I read this novel—even the garden.  I was quickly caught up in Jonny’s unordinary life and indomitable spirit.  His world seemed real, and those weird and wonderful characters, the friends, family, runners I enjoyed very much—not to mention the coaches! Please put my name down for when the sequel comes out.

It was awesome.  It rejuvenated me and made my fire come alive again to run 13:20 or faster this year.  I will encourage everyone I know to read it, because it gave me such a desire.

I enjoyed reading the book.  It was funny, sad in parts and very inspiring.

I don’t have much time to read at night, but I was so into this book that couldn’t put it down and usually stayed up at least 30 minutes later than I had planned just to read another chapter. It was very funny! I love it when I read a book and it doesn’t take 100 pages to get interesting. This one had me laughing right away.  It will definitely be one of those books I read more than once.
